Individual Student Motivation

Goal Setting

Picher-Cardin's Idea ( Individual, Class and School wide Motivation)

The brilliant staff at Picher-Cardin have come up with a wonderful motivational system. Thanks for sharing!!

The Picher-Cardin Elementary School Reading Plus Lab has a variety of rewards for motivating students to make at least a 70% or above and to do re-reads on Guided Reading lessons.  In addition to Guided Reading, all lessons need to be at 70% or above and students are required to chart independently to receive stamps on their charts.  Every time a student receives three stamps, they write their name on a ticket which is placed in a bucket.  Each Monday during our Great Expectations assembly, Mrs. Pace draws five tickets and reads the names of the five winners.  They get to choose a prize.

We have used a “high five” self inking stamper for the charts.  Once the lessons are completed for the session, a teacher checks all scores from the computer with the scores the students have written on their charts and stamps their charts accordingly.  We give double stamps for students who get a 100% on Guided Reading assignments which seems to motivate the majority of the children.  This quarter we have already had students who are as high as 27 stamps and we are brain-storming for new ways to reward them and to keep them motivated.  We stamp for the emergent readers in much the same way, working diligently, and charting independently, etc.

 Stamps are given as follows:

  • 3 Stamps: a ticket

  • 6 Stamps: a ticket and a pencil

  • 9 Stamps: a ticket and a snack

  • 12 Stamps: a ticket and a prize from Motivated Marvel (M&M character which holds prizes as seen in picture)

  • 15 Stamps: a ticket, a pencil and completing PAVE and one Cloze Plus lesson, are allowed to play
on-line computer games or hand-held games

  • 18 Stamps: a ticket and extra recess

  • 21 Stamps: a ticket and a free pass to an end-of-semester party which is held in the gym and includes games, snacks, drinks, a sock-hop and/or a movie.  They also receive a big prize of their choice.
